Recently we shared a post on our social media platforms about workplace culture and how it’s always speaking, whether you are listening or not. We wanted to expound on it because it’s an especially important topic that many business leaders and owners may not fully recognize.

A company’s culture often speaks louder than any company-wide email or team outing. You might think your culture is all about the casual Fridays or the occasional birthday cake, it’s much deeper than that.

Culture is not just what you see on the surface.

Oh, no. As we just mentioned, it’s deeper than that. It’s what happens when no one’s watching, the behaviors that show up when employees think no one’s paying attention. Quiet meetings, loud group chats. Burnout rewarded, honesty punished. That’s culture talking.

Every company has a culture. The real question is: what is yours saying?

Are your systems designed to uphold your company values, or are they just written on a wall somewhere? Your culture is speaking loud and clear in every town hall and team meeting. You may think your words are what your employees hear, but we all know that action speaks louder than words. Your employees are always observing the unspoken rules, the way things actually get done, the patterns that emerge over time. And these moments are your culture in action.

What’s Your Culture Saying?

Here are some examples of what your culture could really be saying:

  • "We value results over well-being." – When employees are encouraged to push through burnout without support or recognition, the culture is telling them that productivity is more important than personal health.
  • "Innovation is celebrated... but only if it fits the status quo." – When employees are hesitant to bring new ideas forward because they’re quickly shut down or ignored, the culture is signaling a resistance to change.
  • "We talk about transparency, but decisions are made behind closed doors." – If leadership frequently communicates the importance of transparency, but major decisions are made without input or clear communication, the culture is telling employees that openness is conditional.
  • "Work hard, but don’t ask for help." – When employees feel the pressure to perform without asking for support, your culture may be reinforcing a ‘do it yourself’ mentality rather than fostering collaboration and teamwork.
  • "We care about diversity, but we don’t show it in our actions." – When diversity and inclusion are discussed in meetings but not reflected in hiring practices or workplace behaviors, your culture is saying that it values appearances over true inclusion.

Culture isn’t a perk. It’s the pulse of your business.

It’s what drives employee behavior, engagement, and ultimately, your success. If your company is struggling with turnover, low morale, or unclear communication, your culture is telling you something. But are you listening?

If your company culture doesn’t reflect the values you claim to uphold, it’s time to reassess. Uncovering the truth about your organization’s culture is key to ensuring it aligns with the values you want to showcase. Building systems and strategies that not only claim your values but live them, every day, in every interaction. It’s essential to cultivating an authentic workplace.

Let’s Make Your Culture Work for You

Creating a great workplace culture goes beyond checking boxes or presenting a surface-level "culture deck." It's about aligning your workplace systems, processes, and behaviors with the values you truly want to cultivate.

Additionally, culture isn’t just something to talk about, it’s something to create and nurture. The goal is to build a workplace that doesn’t just look good on paper but one that authentically reflects your core values every day.
